The Sitting
By Dale Leffler

In the predawn ideas wait for the light of day
hidden behind the shadowy clouds the hover at the horizon.
I sit, I wait, I open myself.

Noises come and fade with no real meaning
just another reminder that now is the only time
and here is the only place I need be.

Inside my head, images of daily tasks, sounds of radio & TV
even my responsibilities assert to detract me
from the practice, from being patient, from the sitting.

Any insight from all this nothing?
Anything productive as an outcome?
Clearly that is not the purpose.

It is the inside that speaks the truth
that the outside tries to ignore.
I know this now and forget
once more.

But then there is always tomorrow.

Similarly Different
By Dale Leffler

As we sit side by side,
some things are not so obvious.
We enjoy each others company
this much is clear, yet as I reflect
we are similarly different.

It does not just start with geography,
the north and south of it all
and all that those cultural definitions that may exist.

Conserve, recycle, and reuse verses
easily expensive

educations verses experiences,
do it yourself or just pay to get it done,
work the plan and plan the work,
shoot to eat or eat with shooters.

And then there is the inner life,
SADD depressions,
the co-dependencies,
the weight gain,
the body loss,
the slowing down,
the lack of strength,
and aversion to risk.

Along with the gentle & respectful
recognition of others,
their struggles that are ours,
compassion for the injured and alone,
the need to reach out,
and to hug and get hugged.

Still there are the silly jokes,
some that are more sad than funny
but what are you gonna do, but laugh?

Yes we were different, we still are,
we rekindle our similarities upon each meeting.
It is the spark that sets the laughter a blaze.
